چکیده
SPINOR is a new spectro-polarimeter that will serve as a facility instrument for the Dunn Solar Telescope at the National Solar Observatory. This instrument is capable of achromatic operation over a very broad range of wavelengths , from ∼400 up to 1600 nm, allowing for the simultaneous observation of several visible and infrared spectral regions with full Stokes polarimetry. Another key feature of the design is its flexibility to observe virtually any combination of spectral lines, limited only by practical considerations (e.g., the number of detectors available, space on the optical bench, etc). SPINOR is scheduled for commissioning by the end of 2005. In this paper we report on the current status of the project and present actual observations of active regions in the Ca II infrared triplet and the He I multiplet at 1083 nm.

Over the last few years, high-quality X-ray imaging and spectroscopic data from Chandra and XMM-Newton have added greatly to the understanding of the physics of radio jets. Here we describe the current state of knowledge with an emphasis on the underlying physics used to interpret multiwavelength data in terms of physical parameters.

A test is proposed for a new Bayesian approach to solar flare prediction (Wheatland 2004). The approach uses the past history of flaring together with phenomenological rules of flare statistics to make a prediction for the probability of occurrence of a large flare within an interval of time, or to refine an initial prediction (which incorporates other information). The test of the method is ba...

Quantum-gravity effects may introduce relevant consequences for the propagation and interaction of high energy cosmic rays particles. Assuming the space-time foamy structure results in an intrinsic uncertainty of energy and momentum of particles, we show how low energy (under GZK) observations can provide strong constraints on the role of the fluctuating space-time structure.

A substantial fraction of prompt GRB spectra have soft spectral indexes exceeding the maximum allowed by the synchrotron model αmax = −2/3. Some spectra also exhibit very sharp break at Ep, inconsistent with the smooth synchrotron spectra. These facts pose a serious problem for the “optically thin synchrotron” interpretation of the prompt emission. We review various models suggested in order to...
